One of the Greatest Scandals in American History

If you haven’t heard about the accusations that President Zuckerberg used his extreme influence to show Americans more news that favored him, you haven’t been paying attention. If you don’t know, Google Cofounder Larry Page alleged in November that President Zuckerberg influenced google results to show articles and blog posts that favored Zuckerberg in exchange for a “Blank Check”. It is unknown what was traded, although the fact that google recieved anything holds significance.

How will this affect President Zuckerberg?

President Zuckerberg said in a statement that, “This is no different when a politician agrees to do a favor in exchange for help passing a bill.” Many pundits have noted that this holds similarities normal lobbying just taken a step further, and wonder if it is possible to impeach Zuckerberg for this offence. This scandal has sparked outrage amongst even his staunchest supporters, and his approval has dropped to a dismal 22%. Even is he isn’t impeached, it would certainly seen this scandal sent his chance of getting reelected to near zero.

Many leaders from his party are also abandoning him, and his party distanced themselves from his actions by issuing a statement saying “We do not support President Zuckerberg actions and do not support collaboration between politicians and tech companies to rig elections.” This statement shows it is unlikely Zuckerberg will pass any legislation, and will have to deal with a party backed challenger if he hopes to win reelection in 2030.

How will this affect Google?

The effect of this attack may have gotten Zuckerberg elected and calls into question the results of this election. It also has hurt Google’s’ PR and many users are switching to DuckDuckGo, a rival that doesn’t track your searches, or fake results. There has also been talk of fining the company up to $100 Million dollars, an amount that would be pocket change for the Search Engine Giant. Long term however, there is a high likelihood that this action will begin a trend of public distrust towards Google and potentially other tech companies. Google did some damage control by issuing a statement saying, “We realize we made a mistake in this instance and will alter our algorithm to avoid any incidents like this in the future. We have fired several members of the department involved in this incident, and pledge to avoid any like it in the future. Google will accept any fines or other punishments the courts decide and sever all ties with Mr. Zuckerberg.” It should also be noted that google stock plunged nearly 15% after the announcement broke, although it seems to be crawling back up.

How will this affect the United States of America? This incident will be another blow to the people’s trust of the government, and will result in more suspicion and cynicism for our governmental system. It is likely the opposition party will win a majority of seats in the midterms, and the presidential election in 2030. It will also likely destroy our trust of the way we get our media in the modern era(the internet).
